Welcome to our weekly newsletter
Autumn leaves L WM

We have our penultimate Job sermons this Sunday as he listens to God and senses who he is. (We prepare for a happy finale!) …
Meanwhile we prepare for our season of remembrance and continue facing the world as it is in the love of God.

The Collect, the prayer for the week
Grant, we beseech you, merciful Lord,
to your faithful people pardon and peace,
that they may be cleansed from all their sins
  and serve you with a quiet mind;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

The churches still look wonderful in autumn splendour and there were very happy recipients at the Reading Drop in Centre and the foodbank and several households. Thank you also to John for organising and to all who came to the lovely Come and Share lunch after the service in St Mary’s.
The Story of Scripture
Story of Scripture logo 1
Our course continues on Tuesday morning, 22nd October, at 10.30am in the Canterbury Room. Each session is independent of the others so do join us. This week we are looking at the story of the Jewish people from their exile to Babylon to their situation in the first century AD, when Jesus and John the Baptist were ministering.
This course from the Diocese of Oxford uses a mixture of video, Bible study, teaching and discussion to give an overview of the story of God’s loving purposes revealed in Scripture. All welcome. Come ready to learn, ask questions and have your hearts and lives stretched.
Coffee
St Andrew’s coffee morning
The monthly coffee morning with cakes will take place in St Andrew’s on Wednesday 23rd October from 10:30am.
All welcome!
20210725 scarecrow 2
Goring Scarecrow trail
Businesses and residents will host a scarecrow outside their properties or in a front window from October 26th to November 2nd and it has been suggested that we could also take part.
Categories for prizes include cutest, scariest and funniest scarecrow. Winners will be voted for by visitors. As you can see in the picture something similar was done in South Stoke a few years ago.
If you would like to help construct a scarecrow to go in the Goring churchyard please let Ben know (875651) If you want to caricature a vicar he can provide an old dog collar shirt, but you may have much better ideas.

Advent 2024
It is never too soon to talk about Advent! The ecumenical Advent groups will be starting the week beginning 18 November and running for 4 weeks. Sign up sheets will be in churches from this Sunday, 20 October.
It’s an opportunity to meet with others from different denominations but who share the same faith. Make space in your diary to pause and pray as we wait expectantly for Christ’s birth.
Come and Sing Faure's Requiem Saturday 2nd November
1.45pm choir for workshop or 5pm for performance
Either join the choir for a workshop in the afternoon or come to listen to a performance interspersed with readings for the season at 5pm. Thanksgiving for the Departed, Sunday 3rd November
autumn leaves all saints WM
The Ministry Team invite all who have lost loved ones, whether recently or longer ago, to come together at St Thomas’ on the 3rd November at 4.00pm to remember those who have died, to give thanks for and to celebrate their lives.
The service is gentle and allows time for reflection and thanksgiving as well as an act of remembrance for those who have died.
Following the service, light refreshments will be served in the Canterbury Room, giving an opportunity to talk with others and with members of the Ministry Team, if you wish.
All are most welcome to come and join in this celebration of the lives of departed loved ones and do please invite others you may know to the service.
Advent candles and calendars
We will soon be ordering chocolate Advent calendars from the Meaningful Chocolate company (https://meaningfulchocolate.co.uk/pages/real-advent-calendar), if people are interested in these. They are no longer sold in supermarkets and would cost £5.50. Please put the money with your order through the Vicarage door by November 10th.

Monday: 8.30am Goring,     Tuesday and Thursday: 8.30am Streatley.
Friday: 9am Goring.

This week we are asked to pray

  • For all who suffer with low spirits or who are, or feel, battered.
  • For our preparations for remembrance-tide as we minister in the hope and love of God to all who are bereaved, and all who suffer as a result of war.
  • For our wisdom for the government as they prepare the budget and for us as we all receive it and work together.
  • For a reduction in plastic usage and waste.
  • We will not be too tidy in our gardens but remember the needs of all creatures!

Prayers for the week
Thank you to Simon for this week’s prayers.

Father God, help us to still our hearts and centre ourselves on your saving grace.

Thank you for the promise of new life, so freely offered and at the start of the week, help us to commit once more to live a life worthy of our calling.

Looking out into a troubled world, we continue to pray for a just resolution to war and conflict in Ukraine, and the Middle East. We ask especially for a breakthrough in the provision of humanitarian aid in Lebanon and Gaza. We pray for guidance for the region’s leaders and international partners in the best way to provide the support required to bring this conflict to a swift conclusion.

During this last month before the election in the United States, we bring the country before you, with thanks for its strong and lasting influence in world affairs. We ask for a peaceful election and for your blessing on the newly elected leader as they prepare for the responsibility of government.

We remember King Charles, asking for wisdom for him and the Ministers that form his new government. With the first budget in the final stages of preparation we pray for those making difficult choices against such a challenging economic backdrop. We pray also for the Ministers piloting the ambitious environmental agenda, as they decide how best to build on the significant progress being made by industry partners.

Here in our Benefice, we ask that you would bless the leaders at our churches - Gavin our Bishop, Ben and the entire ministry team. May we both support them practically and, in our prayers, as they lead the devotional life of the Benefice and especially as they prepare for the coming season of worship.

We pray for our congregations, for health and wellbeing and for the depth of our spiritual journey together. As we reflect on how best to support the work of the church, guide each one of us to think about our response to your generous provision for us, as we recognise that indeed - “All things come from you O Lord, and of your own do we give you.”

Finally, Lord, thank you that you are with us in times of grief and distress; comfort their families and friends and any others who are ill or in suffering at this time.

We commend ourselves, and all for whom we pray, to the mercy and protection of God our Lord and Father.

Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
