Sunday 18th August                                                                 Trinity 12

Welcome to our weekly newsletter
Congregation - smaller

So much knowledge at our finger tips, opportunities to influence people around us, but how much wisdom in our hearts and lives? That’s a question for us.
Solomon had new found power and opportunity as king. What did he aspire to do with it?

Perhaps a garden setting may help us listen and learn…
The Collect, the prayer for the week
  Almighty and everlasting God,
you are always more ready to hear than we to pray
and to give more than either we desire or deserve:
pour down upon us the abundance of your mercy,
forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid
and giving us those good things
which we are not worthy to ask
but through the merits and mediation
of Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Adult singing workshop, 1.45pm-5pm, this Sunday, 18th August
Following the success of the January Singing Workshop, Matt Foster will be running a Singing Workshop at St Thomas’ Church on the afternoon of Sunday 18th August.  After receiving valuable feedback, this workshop is designed for those who don’t read music.  Audio recordings and words are available on the benefice website for those who want to sing the songs before the workshop.  For those who do read music, there will be some harmonies available, but the emphasis is on singing by ear.  The programme will include folk songs (Loch Lomond and Ye Banks and Braes) and popular ‘classics’ such as Flanders and Swann’s Hippopotamus.  More information about the workshop, including how to register, can be found here on the benefice website: www.ThomAndMary.org.uk.
Tree blessing Ian Judd 24.08
Tree Blessing at St Mary’s
Liz Dowding blessed the recently-planted Fastigiate Oak tree outside St  Mary's following the service on 4th August, which Friends of St Mary's purchased as a replacement for the Crab Apple tree planted by Streatley Women's Institute in 1965, in their Golden Jubilee year, which had died.
The tree was planted in honour of Ian Judd, former Tower Captain of St Mary's, and indefatigable mower of the churchyard over many years, even latterly as his health deteriorated, and the plaque beside the tree commemorates his contribution to the church: a true Friend of St Mary's.
Ian's father, Bill, was the Streatley church warden over many years; he is remembered by a plaque in the chancel.
The Fastigiate Oak should live for nearly two centuries; it has all the positive ecological assets of the oak family, but its concise habit will not overwhelm the space at the front of the church.                                                                   John
Steve & Lindsey 24.03 CMS
News from Honduras
We have received a newsletter from Steve and Lindsey Poulson updating us about their work for CMS in Honduras. The rainy season has brought challenges as the roof replacement of the Proyecto Alas building took longer than anticipated so the top floor has been flooded and the projects have had to take place elsewhere.
They also share the story of Scarlet who, following a difficult upbringing, has recently obtained her nursing degree with help from a scholarship from Proyecto Alas.
Please click here to read more about how things are going for them and where they would welcome our prayers. Copies of their newsletter are also in our churches.
August Bank Holiday Teas at St Mary's
As usual, St Mary's will be serving teas outside the Church on 26th August from 2 pm until 5.30pm.
Janet has kindly agreed to play the piano for us inside the Church for some of the afternoon.
If you are able to help serve tea for an hour, and/or to make cakes, please let Rosemary know, as she is acting as co-ordinator. She may be contacted via the church office (875651/officeofgsandss@yahoo.com).

South Stoke’s annual Open Gardens event will also take place on 26th August from 1pm to 5:30pm (last ticket sales at 4pm). There will be tea and cake in the village hall and tours of the bell tower will take place during the afternoon.
StAndrewsCoffeeAndCake
St Andrew’s coffee morning
The monthly coffee morning with cakes will take place in St Andrew’s on Wednesday 28th August from 10:30am. This will mark the 15th anniversary of the monthly coffee mornings. All welcome!
Eco tip for August
Assist local wildlife during very hot weather. Provide hedgehogs with hedgehog biscuits (available at many pet stores and online) or dog biscuits (small/ crumbed) as their prey of slugs, snails and worms diminishes, and ensure a safe exit for them and other small mammals if you have a garden pond. Help garden birds by maintaining a filled bird bath and supplying supplementary food including black sunflower seeds, pinhead oatmeal, soaked sultanas, raisins, currants, mealworms, waxworms, and a nutritious seed mixture, when natural supplies become scarce. More tips can be found at arocha.org.uk/looking-after-wildlife-in-the-heat/

Prayers for the week from "Roots on the Web"
God of creation, as the world turns and we gaze again upon harvest fields, we pray for wisdom to enable us to understand and deal with the challenges posed by climate change. The seasons are no longer clearly defined, and weather often behaves in extreme ways. For ourselves and our loved ones, we pray for the wisdom to be prepared and to take care both at home and abroad; to be aware of the dangers posed by extreme heat, and the consequences of weather events such as wildfires and flooding. For our leaders and climate change experts, we pray for the knowledge to find solutions and the wisdom to use them, putting people before profits so that we may find ways to live safely in our rapidly changing world.
Lord, grant us wisdom above all things.

Heavenly Father, we pray for all who are suffering from illness, whether they are at home or in hospital. These are difficult times for our health services; we pray for all who work within them, from indispensable cleaning staff and porters to those who must make difficult decisions regarding patient care and policy. May resources be distributed wisely and may no-one in need of care and attention fall through the net.
Lord, grant us wisdom above all things.

Lord, as knife crime continues to make headlines, we pray for all who have been affected by this in recent weeks, months and years. We ask for insight to understand why people carry knives, and wisdom for those in positions of power who seek to do something about it. With the help of education programmes in schools, schemes to help disadvantaged teenagers from falling into wrong ways of thinking and behaving, and discernment from those who supervise mental health care, may our streets become safer places.
Lord, grant us wisdom above all things.

Father, we pray for those in our own community who are in any kind of need today. Perhaps they are lonely; perhaps they are hurting in body, mind or spirit, not enough to draw attention, but silently suffering nevertheless. We pray for the wisdom to discern their needs and the understanding to help them. We pray for the bereaved, whose grieving goes on when the world around them has moved on; grant us insight into their pain, so that we might support them.
Lord, grant us wisdom above all things.

Lord God, we pray for all who lead us, at local level, in our nation, or on the world stage. May they be unafraid to admit their vulnerability, as Solomon was; may they seek wisdom above all things, not for their own good, but for the benefit of those they serve. Instead of self-seeking and empty rhetoric, may we have leaders with understanding, discernment, and good judgment.
Lord, grant us wisdom above all things.

In a world driven by social media, Lord Jesus, we pray for discernment in dealing with the conflicting messages we see there every day. May we have the wisdom to hold you as our example, rather than influencers; in our lives, let there be no place for ‘fake it until you make it’. Lead us to come before you in all our vulnerability and insecurity; answer our prayer for wisdom above all things, kneeling before you as Solomon did.
Lord, grant us wisdom above all things.

Finally, Lord, grant us the wisdom to know how to pray. As we bow our heads in church or go forth into a new week with fresh challenges in our own homes and communities, may we have the insight to see where prayer is needed, the wisdom to use it and the understanding that you answer in your own time and manner.
Lord, grant us wisdom above all things. Amen
