The Collect, the prayer for the week

Lord of heaven and earth,
as Jesus taught his disciples to be persistent in prayer,
give us patience and courage never to lose hope,
but always to bring our prayers before you;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

the end of our searching,
help us to lay aside

Adult singing workshop, 1.45pm-5pm, Sunday 18th August
Following the success of the January Singing Workshop, Matt Foster will be running a Singing Workshop at St Thomas’ Church on the afternoon of Sunday 18th August.  After receiving valuable feedback, this workshop is designed for those who don’t read music.  Audio recordings and words are available on the benefice website for those who want to sing the songs before the workshop.  For those who do read music, there will be some harmonies available, but the emphasis is on singing by ear.  The programme will include folk songs (Loch Lomond and Ye Banks and Braes) and popular ‘classics’ such as Flanders and Swann’s Hippopotamus.  More information about the workshop, including how to register, can be found on the benefice website by clicking here: www.ThomAndMary.org.uk.

Prayers for the week
Thank you to Brenda for this week’s prayers.

Gracious God, we pray for Ben and all the ministry team who serve in this Benefice and ask that you will guide and bless us all with their work. Lord you prayed that we should love one another and share your love with those around us.

Gracious God we pray for all those affected by the attack in Southport earlier this week. We pray especially for the parents of the three young children who were killed. Father God, we know you are able to bring them comfort in their grief. The vigil seems to have been particularly powerful, bringing together a community supporting those who have been lost. We also pray for those still in hospital, some in a critical condition, that they may be restored to health.

We pray for the leaders of the nations, and for those in authority under them.

At this time of change we ask that you give our politicians wisdom, putting aside personal ideals and ambitions to seek the common good.

We pray for the troubled areas in the world – Ukraine, the Middle East and Iran. We ask that you raise up leaders to bring reconciliation and relief to the people of these lands.

We pray for our villages; for those who live and work here, and for those who visit.
Father God, we thank you that we live in a beautiful place and that you supply all our needs and more. We pray for all those in our community who are in any sort of want – those who are lonely, those in debt, those without food or a home. Show us how to be alongside them in their suffering and bring relief.

We pray for all those going away on holiday. Bless them and keep them safe as they travel.

We pray for those who do not believe, and yet who long to know you, the very Word of life.

We pray for those bowed down with grief, fear or sickness, particularly those known to us. We pray for those who are caring for them. Give them strength, patience and compassion. May your living Word bring comfort and healing to all those in need.

We give thanks for all those who have died in the faith of Christ including Joan Fountain, and we rejoice with all your saints, trusting in the promise of your word fulfilled.

Lord of life,
Hear our prayer and make us one in heart and mind to serve you with joy for ever. Amen.
